NY Yankees Yogi Berra

The Saturday Evening Post published some of the best magazine covers ever, like this one, illustrated by Earl Mayan in 1957. It features New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra waiting on a pop fly, while the crowd looks on anxiously. And to think you could once pay just 15 cents for this calibre of product.

World Cup 2010 gets real on EA game

29 Apr

World Cup 2010 XBox and PS3World Cup soccer is closing in fast – 42 days until kick-off to be exact.  While diehards practice their face painting and team songs, gamers are limbering up for the new football release from EA Sports. FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 on PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 includes a special “Story of the Finals” feature that allows gamers to relive big moments from the actual tournament, hours after games are played. The free service (sponsored by Coke) connects players in virtual matches which tackle the very same challenges their heroes actually faced in the tournament. Sounds eerily real.

Mad Magazine football cartoon

If you love MAD Magazine like we do, then you’ll know Mort Drucker. Drucker is to the caricaturing world what Montana was to Super Bowls – a master. We especially love his sports pieces for their wit and originality, but also their poignancy. Mort turned 81 last month – we salute you sir!

Seattle Sounders “electric” yellow jersey

28 Apr

Seattle Sounders jerseySeattle Sounders FC revealed their new third kit last week and it’s very, ah…well, bright. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. People’s color preferences are their own personal choice. But seriously. This one could guide ships into Puget Sound on a dark, foggy night. Thankfully the new strip will be used sparingly says Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer, and we’re onboard with that decision. How can you go past the team’s lime green anyway? You can’t.

Sports Illustrated comes to life with iPad

27 Apr

Here’s Sports Illustrated on the Apple iPad. In a word, it’s awesome. The ability to flick through rows of beautiful SI photos, arrange content in whatever order you like, as well as customize your own “team” pages, make tablet mags the most exciting thing to happen in sports media in some time. And the addition of video to your weekly SI – including the always engrossing Swimsuit Issue – surely is whetting the appetite of even the biggest skeptics. Bring it on!

Canucks celebrate

27 Apr

Vancouver Canucks“Canucks Day” has been announced in the city of Vancouver, following the team’s dramatic first round series win against the LA Kings. While some fans are not thrilled by the idea, we think it’s great to see the mayor and the city embrace the club. They’re even sending Fin the Canucks mascot downtown to hand out white towels. He’s working on an off day – give it up folks.
